Lira MP’s school results withheld over malpractice

Lira City.

The examinations body, UNEB has reportedly withheld the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education results for Light vocational secondary school in Lira City over alleged involvement in gross exams malpractice.

On Thursday afternoon, the Minister of education and sports also the first lady Janet Kataha Museveni released the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education results at state house Nakasero.

According to UNEB’s executive secretary, Dan N Odongo, the results indicate an in increase in performance compared to the one of 2022.

Following the release of results many schools especially those in the urban areas started sharing with the media, how their candidates performed.

At Light Vocational Secondary Lira, which is owned by Lira City West Division Member of Parliament Vincent Shedrick Obong Eyit, there was uncommon silence amongst the teachers and students as questions pour in, on why the administration could not access the results from the UNEB portal.

According to credible and knowledgeable source at the school, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter said results of all the 324 candidates that registered and sat for the UCE examinations at the school have all been withheld by UNEB.

For the last five years, the school had positioned itself amongst the best five performing schools not only in Lango’s capital, Lira City but also in the entire sub-region.

A section of students who sat UCE examinations at the school told Voice of Lango Fm that after the release of the results by UNEB they tried to access the results using sms through the telecommunication companies and failed until they gave up.

Attemps to get comments from the school authorities including the headteacher and the Managing Director, Vincent Obong Eyit on their known telephone numbers were futile as they all unavailable.

In the list of results for all the 47 schools by ranking in both Lira City and district, Light Vocational secondary school is also visibly missing.

Speaking during the release of the results, Dan Odongo says  much as there have been continuous reduction in the cases of malpractices, UNEB will withhold results of some schools.

According to Odongo, most of the cases that were reported were external assistances given to the candidates inside the examinations rooms and the most affected where physics and chemistry practical’s exams.

He added that the affected schools will be notified through their portals on the dates of the hearing by the examinations body.
