Lira City earmarks 2.5B for fencing headquarters,beautifaction of spaces

Lira City.

Lira City Council will utilize 2.5 Billion shillings in the next four months on three key infrastructural projects.

The projects include fencing off the Mayor’s garden and City Council headquarters,installation of new solar street lights and beautification of some selected open spaces within the central business district.

The 2.5 Billion is part of unspent balance of Uganda Support to Infrastructure Municipal infrastructure Development (USMID) funds project. In the third phase of the USMID project, government allocated 35 Billion shillings to Lira City for upgrade of roads and beautification of both Adyel and Coronation parks.

According to the approved budget, beautification of Numa grounds/tipper stage will cost the city council 1 Billion, installation of new solar street lights at a cost of 1.1Billion, repair of existing solar street light within the central business district will be done at a cost of 300M while institutional strengthening has been allocated 182M.

The secretary for works and technical services, Herbert Apita says the executive committee of Lira City Council in their 19th December 2023 sitting, directed that the unspent 2.5Billion be utilized on three acceptable areas provided in the USMID investment menu.

 Lira City Council secretary for finance James Omara Elem said the contract awarded to Dubai Garden Centre Limited will also include construction of toilets and beautification of the mayors’ garden.

Omara says they have tasked the contractor to complete the works by June 2024.

Town Clerk of Lira city Theophilus Tibihika expressed hope the contractor will execute quality work in the project.

Lira City speaker, Patrick Okwir applauded the city councilors and executive for approving funds to facilitate this project.
