Police Confirm Plans to Construct Schools on Contested Erute Land in Lira City

The Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba, has confirmed plans by the Uganda Police Force to construct a primary, secondary school, and a technical vocational institute on the contested land in Erute Lira City.
IGP Abbas who unveiled the plan during a strategic meeting yesterday with the North Kyoga police leadership at Lira Hotel, said, the initiative aims to support the education of children of police officers.
The IGP Byakagaba also inspected several police facilities, including the regional police headquarters, the police housing facilities at barracks, and the disputed land in Erute during his visit to Lira City.

He commended the North Kyoga Police for safeguarding the Erute land and said discussions with the wider police leadership are ongoing regarding the proposed police development initiatives.
He noted that plans are underway to procure a brick-laying machine to support the production of materials for the proposed police construction projects.
The land is being contested by police and a group of people who procured part of it from Lira district.
The IGP also pledged continued efforts to enhance the welfare of police officers, highlighting initiatives such as the provision of new uniforms, construction of accommodation and office blocks, establishment of police stations in every sub-county, and the procurement of motorcycles for field operations.
He confirmed that 1,000 motorcycles are ready for distribution and Shs 6 billion has been allocated for the other projects.
Byakagaba cautioned police officers against indiscipline and involvement in activities outside their official duties, especially during the political season.
He warned that such misconduct could lead to legal consequences or stagnation in ranks.
