Opposition Leaders Condemns Decision to Block UPCPresident Jimmy Akena from Presidential Race

A section of opposition political party leaders has condemned the Electoral Commission’s move to block Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena from being nominated to contest in the upcoming presidential elections.
Patrick Oboi Amuriat, president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), described the decision as regrettable, saying the internal disagreements within UPC should not have escalated to the point of denying Akena his constitutional right to contest.
He expressed his support for Akena’s decision to pursue legal redress, emphasizing that the move by the Electoral Commission was a violation of Akena’s democratic rights.
Meanwhile, Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of Opposition in Parliament and spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), expressed sympathy, calling Akena’s disqualification a blow to his party’s political representation.
Both leaders called on the people of Lango to channel their political energy and support toward opposition parties like FDC and NUP, in light of UPC’s inability to participate in the election.
