{"id":6935,"date":"2024-11-12T17:09:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T14:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vol.co.ug\/?p=6935"},"modified":"2024-11-12T17:11:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T14:11:19","slug":"investigation-launched-into-defilement-of-disabled-child-in-lira-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vol.co.ug\/index.php\/2024\/11\/12\/investigation-launched-into-defilement-of-disabled-child-in-lira-district\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigation launched into defilement of disabled child in Lira district"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vol.co.ug\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/download-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6936\" width=\"331\" height=\"220\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By Denis Okello (denis.okello@vol.co.ug)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lira<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Union for Persons with Disabilities in Uganda (NUDIPU) has sent a team of lawyers to Itek Sub County, Lira district to investigate an alleged case of defilement involving a minor with a mental disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathew Omara, NUDIPU&#8217;s chairperson for Lango region, said that Hilda Waca, the chairperson for persons with mental disabilities, along with the legal team, have been sent to assess the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident reportedly happened in Atongokoo, Ajia Parish, Itek Sub County, where an unidentified man is accused of defiling his niece, who has a mental disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omara also called on the Electoral Commission to extend the registration period for people with disabilities on the national disability register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The registration, which began on November 4, 2024, is scheduled to end on November 13, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omara expressed concerns that many people with disability may miss the registration due to limited publicity of the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Additionally, he noted that the Electoral Commission has not provided sign language interpreters, creating further obstacles for persons with disabilities seeking to register<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Denis Okello (denis.okello@vol.co.ug) Lira The National Union for Persons with Disabilities in Uganda (NUDIPU)&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":true,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[60,10],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
