Government degazettes Yosam Odur as Lango Paramount Chief

Government has degazetted Yosam Odur Ebii as the Won Nyaci of Lango (Paramount Chief) effective 1st November 2024, paving way for the much anticipated transition scheduled for 2nd November 2024.

In gazzate notice number 724 of 2024 published by the Uganda Gazzatte on the 19th of April 2024,signed by the Minister of Gender labor and social development Betty Amongi, Yosam Odur who has been the Won Nyaci of Lango for nearly two decades will abdicate office on the 1st of November.

Minister Amongi who is also Oyam County South legislator says she exercised her powers using the Institution of Traditional and Cultural leaders act section 8(a) of 2011.

On the 10th of December 2023, Yosam Odur Ebii in his letter to the Minister of Gender Labor and Social Development informed her that he will abdicate office of the Won Nyaci of Lango by 1st of November 2024.

He however, in another letter dated 15th of April 2024 asked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to halt all matters regarding the trasition of Lango Cultural Leadership transition.

The reigning paramount chief says he was forced to reconsider his decision to retire but to hold on to the throne, something that the Gender Ministry seems to have ignored.

Odur (94) who has been at the helm of Lango Cultural Leadership since 2003, following his abdication notice, appointed electoral commission led by retired head teacher Tom Otim to organize the election of his successor

On the 1st of March 2024, Eng. Dr. Micheal Moses Odongo Okune (58) won a popular election held at Akii Bua Stadium as the new Won Nyaci of Lango with 90 percent of the total votes cast. Over 1700 delegates drawn from over 140 clans participated in the election.

Dr. Odongo will be enthroned as the new Won Nyaci of Lango on the 2nd of November 2024 in an event expected to be attended by over 1 Million people according to the Council of Owitong’s plan.
