Speaker of parliament to preside over urban speakers’ training

Speaker of parliament, Annette Anita Among will preside over capacity building training of urban council speakers.

The secretary, Uganda Urban Council of Speakers’ Association, Okwir Patrick said they met Speaker Anita Among and highlighted challenges facing speakers including inadequate knowledge to chair council sittings.

Okwir said speaker Among has supported their planned training.

Last week, the speaker of Lira city west division, Daniel Okello suspended James Omara Elem, the councilor of City west B, to Lira City council during the division council meeting.

Okwir said this was an evidence that there is still lack of knowledge in chairing council meetings among speakers, which calls for their capacity building.

Okwir noted that, they also tabled before the speaker, low and delayed payment of their ex-gratia among other challenges facing them.

He said speaker Among promised to meet the Minister for local government, Raphael Magyezi to forge a way forward on the matter.
