Lira grade one court has released on bail, the National Unity Platform party coordinator of northern Uganda and two others who were recently arrested for convening an illegal assembly.
The trio were arrested as they held an anti-corruption demonstration in Lira city recently.
Grade one magistrate, Wamibi Jonathan William released Mawa Moses the National Unity Platform coordinator together with, a human rights activist, Denis Obic Awio and Tweny Martin a local of Teso Bar, Lira city. They are supposed to report back to court on 7/11/2024.
Their lawyer, Okwir Patrick said his clients were released after presenting substantial sureties. He said court also conquered that it is a legal right for one to hold a demonstration to express their dissatisfaction.
Sega Habib Jogo, the NUP deputy secretary for mobilization for northern Uganda said it was absurd that Mawa and colleagues were arrested for demonstrating against corruption which is rife in Uganda.
Sega said he will follow up the matter to ensure the trio get justice.
