Reproductive health experts have welcomed a proposal by the Bishop of Lira diocese calling for the use of natural family planning methods by women.

They however say that natural family planning does not favor all categories of women much as it is feasible.

Bishop Sanctos Lino Wanok said the contraceptives women are using for
family planning has continued to tie them in bondage yet the world has for long been advocating for women emancipation.

Wanok also said that dependence on some contraceptives like condoms is
responsible for the rampant teenage pregnancies recorded recently since the young generation got used to them, but during the recent covid-19 induced lockdown, they could not easily access them.

Bishop Wanok said that most of these contraceptives are made by people
who are money minded at the expense of the health of women who use them.

The manager Reproductive Health Lira, Lapat Geoffrey said natural family planning does not favor all people but only those whose monthly cycle does not vary from time to time and mostly older women.

Lapat explained that before someone is enrolled on any contraceptive, they are counseled and allowed to choose the preferred method in line with the reproductive health right.

Dr. Nedi Tom Lawrence of Lira Medical Diagnostic center, said natural
family planning is possible in situations where a woman’s monthly cycle is stable and a couple is willing to abstain from sex during fertile days of the month.
