The Anglican Church has selected Lango diocese and West Lango Diocese to lead prayers to celebrate the life of the third Archbishop of the church of Uganda, Janani Jakaliya Luwum.
Janani Jakaliya Luwum was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1974 to 1977 and one of the most influential leaders of the modern church in Africa.
He was arrested in February 1977 and died shortly after.
Although the official account describes a car crash, it is generally accepted that he was murdered on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.
Since 2015 Uganda has a public holiday on 16 February, to celebrate the life of Janani Luwum with a payer at his ancestral home in Mucwini, Kitgum district
The Public Relations Officer of Lango diocese David Livingstone Okello said Lango Diocese and West Lango diocese will preside over the prayers which will involve activities like preaching, overnight prayers among others.
Okello DL said they are also working towards promoting Janini Luwum’s grave as a tourist site.
Okello said they have already sent a team from Lango diocese to Kitgum to begin preparations for the event.
He called for unity from all Christians from Lango for the success of the event.
