Lira City.

Aromo and Ayami Sub Counties in Lira district are registering increasing cases of epilepsy.

The Lira assistant DHO in charge child and maternal health Edmond Aceka says cases of epilepsy are high in Aromo and Ayami and the health department of Lira district is struggling to offer medical assistance to the affected persons at Aromo HCIII.

Aceka said epilepsy is genetically transmitted and can only be managed but not treated.

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness.

Erute North MP Akello Christine said there are about 50 people suffering from epilepsy in Aromo and Ayami and are in need of support.

The same sub counties are battling with both Epilepsy and Nodding Syndrome.

However, Aceka said they are registering a lot of improvement in the health of these children.

“Four children who are suffering from nodding syndrome in Lira district have joint schools”, Aceka said.

He said two mature people among those suffering from nodding syndrome married women while one woman has given birth and another is pregnant.

He said they are offering medical services to the nodding syndrome victims at Aromo HC III.

Aceka however said they have been facing challenges caring for these people after their caretaker Psychiatrist Ajok Jane died but they are having plans of replacing her with another nurse.

He said the most serious challenge they are currently facing is inadequate food after government took long to send relief food.

MP Akello said she is linking up with the office of the prime minister and well-wishers to support these people’s welfare.
