Lira City has received over 3 billion shillings for payment of teachers’ salary arrears.

The coordinator of Lira City teachers Edward Ayo said they have received communication from Lira City town clerk Edward Kiwanuka confirming the development in a meeting with them recently.

He said out of the funds, 2.6 billion will cater for payments of primary school teachers’ salary while 1.1 million will go to payments of secondary school teachers and 49 million shillings for tutors in higher institutions of learning.

Ayo said they expect that the salaries of teachers that had not been paid for three months will be cleared this week.

Teachers of Lira City who have been on strike over delays in payment of their salaries resumed teaching recently after getting assurance from Lira City leadership that their payments would be cleared.

Effort to speak to Lira City town clerk Edward Kiwanuka to confirm the planned teachers’ salary payments was futile by press time.
