Lira Diocese denies backing Minister Amongi’s bid for Lira City Woman MP

Lira Catholic Diocese has dismissed as baseless political propaganda, rumors insinuating that they are backing Minister of gender, Betty Amongi’s bid to run for Lira City woman MP seat in 2026.

According to the Diocesan sea, this cheap talk is intended to malign and tarnish the name and reputation of the Bishop Ordinary of Lira Catholic Diocese, Rt.Rev.Sanctus Lino Wanok.

It comes at a time Lira City woman MP also minister of health Dr Jane Aceng Ocero and Oyam south MP, also minister of Gender,Labor and Social Development Betty Amongi are reportedly scrambling for the prestigious Lira City woman MP seat come 2026.

Addressing a media conference Friday evening at Apostolic Social Center, Lira City,Diocesan Chancellor, Rev Father Emmanuel  Opio warned people against going around with the manes of Lira Diocese bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok and Lira Diocese with claims that they are backing Amongi for Lira city woman MP seat.

“ As the Chancellor of the Diocese, I want to categorically tell the people of Lango that these are just lies, cheap teak and political propaganda intended to malign the name of the Bishop”.     

He added that it is every one’s right to contest which the Church also respect and that the name of the Church should not be dragged in it as supporting a particular candidate.

Fr Opio who is also the rector of Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Lira says The Catholic Church which is the universal and mother church unites everybody and that as leaders of the church, they shall receive and work with whosoever is elected.

He said the Church cannot in any way impose any person on the people to be elected, urging people to respect each other name and reputation as they play politics.

“As we play politics we should respect each other, and respect their names, people have a right to a good name and good reputation, it is not good to tarnish some body’s name because of politics” says Fr Opio.
