UPC Suspends Apac Municipality MP Nomination Process Amid Internal Disputes

The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has suspended the nomination process for flag bearers in the Apac Municipality parliamentary race to allow for resolution of disagreements between contestants and their supporters.

While the party successfully concluded the nomination process for other constituencies, the Apac Municipality process was put on hold to allow time for mediation and resolution of the emerging conflicts.

UPC Electoral Commission Chairperson Hajji Kazimbiraine Mahmoud confirmed the development, stating that a separate session will be organized for Apac Municipality aspirants to pick nomination forms at a later date.

UPC Lango Regional Chairperson Ongom Chris explained that the process was also delayed due to an unresolved matter concerning the expulsion of Apac Municipality MP Ocan Patrick from the party.

He said Apac UPC chairperson has since written to the party president Jimmy Akena about Ocan’s expulsion from the party awaiting a response, one of the reasons the nomination process could not proceed.

According to Ongom, the UPC secretariat reviewed the resolution by the Apac District leadership and found the expulsion of Ocan to be unconstitutional.

He said the party constitution outlines that complaints against a member must first be brought before the disciplinary committee for redress.
If unresolved, the matter can then be escalated to the party’s National Council.
