Timber dealers and carpenters have threatened to drag Lira city council to court over plans to evict them from the city center and relocate them to the timber yard in Railway, Lira city east division.

In their meeting held at Bazaar East cell, they demanded an alternative place to relocate them, apart from the timber yard.

They threatened to shift their workshops to either the mayor’s garden or the air filed in Railway ward, should Lira city council go ahead with plans to forcefully evict them.

The chairperson Lira United Carpenters Association Patrick Opio accused Lira city leadership of offering land that was meant for them to politicians, businessmen and civil servants leaving them without space to operate from.

Benjamin Okii who owns a wood workshop along Bala Road advised their members to collect money and buy their own land and also consider dragging Lira city council to court to stop their eviction.

Recently, Lira city town clerk Tibihika Theophilus gave the carpenters and timber dealers till 1/04/2023 to vacate the city center.

Lira city acting spokesperson Robert Okello Ayo by press time said he was still in a meeting when we sought his comments.
