Lira city west division council meeting that was supposed to be held today hangs in balance after councilors in support of the speaker Daniel Okello and others aligned to mayor Michael Ogwal Aconga reportedly went into hiding yesterday.
Last week, Lira city returning officer, Rashid Hasakye wrote to Lira city West division town clerk, calling for a council meeting to be convened to debate a motion for resolution of council to remove the division speaker, Daniel Okello from office on 24th/ July/ 2023.
Previously, Daniel Okello ran to court to challenge his censor process by councilors and court instituted a temporary injunction stopping the same and allowed him to continue his role as speaker of Lira city west division.
Lira high court judge, Justice Dancun Gaswaga ruled that Okello’s censorship process was within the law.
The council meeting to debate on a motion for resolution of council to remove the division speaker, Daniel Okello from office was supposed to take place today but according to reports, some councilors Lira city west division mysteriously disappeared yesterday.
It is reported that over 20 councilors were seen boarding a van yesterday headed for Gulu city as a way of ensuring quorum is not realized for today’s council meeting to hold.
Lira city west division deputy mayor, Rose Ongom said they got reports that some councilors went to Gulu city where they are reportedly hiding.
She denied rumors that the executive yesterday evening took other councilors to Gulu city to hide them so that quorum is not realized to debate the matter.
Rose Ongom said yesterday they visited the mayor who is sick with some other councilors.
Daniel Okello the speaker of Lira city west division denied hiding councilors in Gulu city, adding that he was just returning from Kampala yesterday.
