Lira Chief Magistrate Court has released on bail, City businessman Geoffrey Etwop.

Etwop who is also the treasurer of National Resistance Movement party for Lira district was charged with fraudulent procurement of certificate of title, contrary to section 190 of the registration of titles Act Cap 230.

The public land in question is located on plot 16-18 Soroti road popularly known as Tipper Stage, in Lira City East Division.

According to prosecution Etwop around August 2017 to November 2020 reportedly obtained a land tittle for land on plot 16-18, Soroti Road in his names.

The presiding chief magistrate Abiti Samson Loum released Etwop on cash bail of shs 5M while his surerities were each bonded 10M, non-cash. The surerities include; Johnson Ochol the treasurer of Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Lira branch, Colline Akao Etwop, Okello Daniel, speaker of Lira City West division, Akwanga Francis, son to Etwop and Lira businessman,

The court also asked Etwop to deposit and national identity card and present his title to confirm is place of residence.

He presented four sureties who include; Akao Collin Etwop, Johnson Ocol.

Robert Irumba, Etwop’s lead counsel said his client is a law abiding citizen and it is his right to be released on bail.

Chief resident state attorney Jonathan Okello says the sureties are people of high reputation and agrees that court sets favorable terms of the bail

Lira chief magistrate Abiti Samson Loum said much as the charges against Etwop was sanctioned by the DPP, it’s his constitutional right to be released on bail.

The matter has been adjourned to 7th March 2024 for mention.
