Lira City.
The Prime Minister of Uganda Robinah Nabbanja is next week expected to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Lango Cultural Palace.
The Lango Cultural Palace will be constructed at the cultural institution’s land located in senior quarters, Lira City.
The development was on Friday announced by Prime Minister Robina Nabanjja when she was speaking during the welcome and thanks giving ceremony organized by the minister of state for Northern Uganda Dr. Kenneth Olusegun Omona.
Nabanjja said that her office recently received an approved plan for the palace and it is in the process of mobilizing CMD Investment Limited, a construction company that was awarded the contract for the construction of the palace at a contract sum of shs 3.5 billion.
Her statement followed a request from the chairperson of Lango parliamentary group Judith Alyek that the government should expedite the process of commencing the construction using the shs 1 billion provided by the office of the Prime Minister.
Alyek stressed the need to have the palace constructed saying Lango is in the final preparation to enthrone its leader Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune in November this year and after the enthronement, the Wonyaci will have no official residence and office space.
Three weeks ago,the Government Chief Whip also Ajuri County MP, Denis Hamson Obua told clan heads at a meeting in Lango Cultural Center that government had made available shillings 1B to start the construction of the long awaited palace.
The Speaker of the Council Owitong Willy Omodo Omodo welcomed the news saying Tekwaro Lango is delighted that the government is committed to starting the construction of the Palace after years of pleadings to have the palace built.
In 2022, the fallen former speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanya officiated the ground breaking ceremony for the Lango Cultural Palace, but later on the contractor abandoned the site for unclear reasons.
