Councilors accuse Lira city leaders of corruption in USMID project implementation

A section of councilors of Lira city have accused Lira city leaders of corruption in implementation of the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project.
They cite the 117 solar street lights that they say were installed along boundary road that is under construction out of the 184 that had been planned for the road.
Lydia Akello the councilor of Junior Quarters and Kirombe in Lira city west division accused the city authority of corruption, adding that even at Adyel Children’s park, the street lights were supposed to be installed but nothing has been done.

The speaker of Lira city west division Okello Daniel on his part cited a grass thatched building under construction at the mayors’ garden whose value he says is not worth the shs800 million earmarked for beautification of the mayors’ garden.
Okello called on the office of the President to probe the mayors’ garden project and utilization of one billion shillings roads rehabilitation funds received from government.
Lira city female workers councilor Sarah Awor Angweri said her efforts to compel different government anti-corruption agencies to probe corruption allegations in Lira city failed and she has been left with no option but to mobilize locals to demonstrate.
Lira city engineer, Freddie Owiny said all the street lights planned for boundary road will be fixed.
