In a move aimed at promoting girls’ education, Plan International has donated sanitary pads to Bar Apwo Primary School in Lira City West Division. The donation is intended to support girls in Primary 4 to Primary 7, helping them stay in school consistently during their menstrual periods.

During the handover event at the school, Headteacher Boniface Omol expressed gratitude to Plan International for the generous support. He said the sanitary pads will go a long way in ensuring that girls attend school regularly and concentrate on their studies without interruption.

“We are very thankful to Plan International for this timely support,” said Omol. “This donation will help many girls remain in class and continue with their education without shame or fear.”

However, Omol also highlighted ongoing challenges at the school, including overcrowded classrooms and a severe shortage of desks. With around 2,000 pupils currently enrolled, he noted that Primary 7 classes are particularly congested.

In addition to the infrastructure issues, the head teacher cited persistent water shortages at the school, which continue to impact hygiene and overall learning conditions.

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairperson for Primary 7, Mzee Tom Oluge, also raised concerns about parental involvement. He urged parents to take greater responsibility in supporting their children’s education, noting that lack of support from home negatively affects student performance.

Plan International’s donation is seen as a vital step in empowering young girls and addressing some of the barriers to education faced by pupils at Barapwo Primary School.
