UPC party president accuses NRM government of crippling Uganda’s economy

President of the Uganda People’s Congress- UPC party, Jimmy Akena has accused the ruling NRM government of crippling Uganda’s economy.
At a press conference held at Uganda House, Jimmy James Michael Akena said in 1980, UPC moved to liberalize Uganda’s economy to allow privatization but still had control over the economy but later the NRM government adopted the same plan but failed to regulate the economy.
He cited the sale of Uganda Commercial Bank that had been set up for farmers.
He also slammed the ruling NRM over poor education system that has seen a high rate of school dropout among children.
Akena further noted that teachers and health workers are also working without motivation due to low reverence accorded to them.
He also re-resonated his 2026 presidential bid to shape the country’s future
According to the International Monetary Fund-IMF, Uganda’s economy grew by 6% in 2023/24 financial year, compared to 2022/23 financial year where it stood at 5.3%.
