Teachers of Kwania, Apac decry discrepancies in salary enhancement

Teachers in Apac and Kwania district have decried discrepancies in salary enhancement which is favoring science teachers at the expense of their arts counterparts.
The complaints were raised during the recent World Teachers’ Day commemoration for Apac and Kwania district, marked under the theme; “Valuing teachers’ voices towards a new social contract for education”.
James Okidi the chairperson Uganda National Teachers’ Union-UNATU for Kwania branch said much as they have 812 registered members in Kwania district, very few of them attended this year’s world teachers’ day celebrations, linking it to their dissatisfaction over late salary payment and disparities in salary enhancement to favor science teachers.
Okidi called on more teachers to join UNATU to boost their lobbying capacity for better remuneration and welfare.
Christopher Oguta, the Principal Human Resources Officer of Kwania district who was chief guest at the function also called on teachers to unite together to advocate for salary increment under their union and asked them to utilize the current salary they are paid on developmental projects to support their livelihood.
James Akeba, the head teacher of Apac seed Secondary school noted that despite teachers’ contribution in preparing Uganda’s workforce, they are being left without meaningful support.
Francis Adoko, a teacher from Apac District who was also one of the organizers of this year’s event decried discrimination in salary increment among arts and science teachers.
Odongo Asante the LCV chairman of Apac District called on government to allow recruitment of more teachers to fill staffing gaps in the education department in the district.
Ambrose Ogwal, the UNATU National Executive Committee Member and director of Wisdom High School who spoke at the event held at Kwania Resort Hotel called for equal remuneration for all teachers.
