The National Union for Persons with Disabilities in Uganda (NUDIPU) has sent a team of lawyers to Itek Sub County, Lira district to investigate an alleged case of defilement involving a minor with a mental disability.
Mathew Omara, NUDIPU’s chairperson for Lango region, said that Hilda Waca, the chairperson for persons with mental disabilities, along with the legal team, have been sent to assess the incident.
The incident reportedly happened in Atongokoo, Ajia Parish, Itek Sub County, where an unidentified man is accused of defiling his niece, who has a mental disability.
Omara also called on the Electoral Commission to extend the registration period for people with disabilities on the national disability register.
The registration, which began on November 4, 2024, is scheduled to end on November 13, 2024.
Omara expressed concerns that many people with disability may miss the registration due to limited publicity of the exercise.
Additionally, he noted that the Electoral Commission has not provided sign language interpreters, creating further obstacles for persons with disabilities seeking to register
