NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi has dismissed allegations by UPC Party President, Jimmy Akena, regarding intimidation of UPC members ahead of the upcoming by-election for the Kisoro District Woman MP seat, following the recent passing of Sarah Mateke.
During the popular Wimeja program, Jimmy Akena voiced concerns about alleged voter bribery and intimidation that UPC members are reportedly facing in the lead-up to the election. Akena, however, expressed confidence that their candidate, Mable Ingabile, is receiving strong support from the community.
Akena also highlighted a wave of defections in Kisoro from other parties to UPC and shared that he is actively consulting on his bid for the 2026 presidential election, aiming to enhance service delivery to citizens.

In response, Dr. Tanga Odoi refuted Akena’s claims, asserting that the alleged intimidation of UPC members is unfounded. He stated that it is instead their NRM candidate, Rose Kabagyeni, and independent NRM-leaning candidate, Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, who have been competing closely in the area.
Dr. Tanga also downplayed UPC’s influence in the by-election, suggesting that the party lacks the capacity to secure a victory, since the party is only popular in Lango.
He further denied reports of widespread defections to UPC, challenging Akena’s claims.
