An angry mob at the dawn of Tuesday lynched one Tony Opeto alias Mureffu at Lira Town College grounds after he was suspected of being among a group of suspected thieves who broke into Obanga Ngeo Hardware shop, located on Obote Avenue.

The proprietor of Obanga Ngeo Hardware Emily Ogwal said she got reports from her watchmen informing her that they had arrested a suspected thief who had broken into their shop and when she came they tried calling police to pick him up but Mureffu took off.

She said Mureffu was chased by an angry mob that lynched him while his three accomplices fled.

They left behind a motorcycle registration number UFH 449N which was picked up by police to support investigation into the matter.

The proprietor of JASPERO electronics shop, Jasper Amai said he lost eight smartphones worth 2.8 million shillings after people whom they suspect were part of the same group of thieves broke into their shop the same night.

The community liaison officer of Lira city East division, ASP Peter Ogwal warned the public against mob justice, asking them to report suspects to police for arrest and prosecution. He also asked the youth to embrace hard work to earn a living as opposed to theft.
