Fate of Lira City West Division speaker to be decided tomorrow

The fate of the speaker of Lira City West Division is expected to be decided tomorrow, 15th/11/2022 in a meeting that is convened by Lira City Returning Officer, Rashid Hasakya.

Last month, a section of councilors of Lira City West division led by Samuel Akar signed a petition to remove their speaker Daniel Okello over allegations of causing division and unnecessary conflict in the council.   

After their petition, the minister of Local government Raphael Magyezi whom the petition was addressed to convened a meeting in Kampala involving the mayor Lira City West Division and his embattled speaker in trying to address the matter. Magezi also promised to come to Lira City to resolve the conflict.

Daniel Okello when contacted for comment on tomorrow’s meeting declined to comment.

The speaker of Lira City Council Patrick Okwir said as the association of urban councils they were waiting for the minister of local government to resolve the conflict before the speaker is removed.

He however said the council has power to remove the speaker but there is a lacuna in the law on who chairs the meeting to elect the new speaker.
