Lira city council lays draft Shs. 49.2B budget for FY 2023/2024

Lira city council has laid a draft budget of 49.2 billion shillings for 2023-2024 financial year.

5.7 billion shillings is expected to be raised from revenue collection, 43.3 from central government.

Meanwhile, 2.9 has been allocated for administration,745, million for production and marketing department,40 million for HIV fight, 42 million for planning, 745 million for natural resources and 2.4 billion for works and technical services.

Out of the locally raised revenue, Lira City East Division will receive 210 million shillings for naming roads, procurement of garbage collection materials, construction of toilets, and opening of community access roads among others.

Lira city West division will receive 207 million shillings for opening new roads, expansion of Ober HCIV and the division offices, construction of toilets at Lira P7, procurement of culverts, and naming roads.

Lira city secretary for finance James Omara Elem while reading the draft budget at the council meeting held at 291 Suites Hotel said the budget is meant to address poor garbage management, low revenue collection, poor roads, and destruction of wetlands among others.

During the heated debate in council, the female workers representative Awor Sarah Angweri was suspended by the speaker over indiscipline for two consecutive sittings.

Awor Sarah Angweri in an interview with Voice of Lango maintained that she was playing her role as a workers’ representative.

Speaker Okwir said the accused, Awor exhibited indiscipline and tried to overrule him.
