Chinese gov’t withdraws from construction of Akii Bua Stadium

The Chinese government has withdrawn from constructing Akii Bua and Buhinga Stadia.

Speaking at the floor of parliament on Tuesday, the state minister for sports, Peter Ogwang said the Chinese government had withdrawn from financing stadium construction of Akii Bua and Buhinga in Lira city and Fort Portal respectively.

Minister Ogwang who is also Usuk County MP asked parliament to allocate funds for construction of stadia in the country without relying on foreign funds.

State Minister for finance, Amos Lugolobi said the Chinese government on 30th- March- 2023 announced at the Forum for China Africa Cooperation in Dakar, Senegal that it would not finance Akii Bua and Buhinga stadium construction.

He said an alternative source of funding should be got for construction of these stadia.

The deputy speaker of parliament Thomas Tayebwa, yesterday tasked minister Ogwang to write a report on the matter and present before parliament next Wednesday.

The ministry of education has already conducted feasibility study for the two stadia, awaiting commencement of the project.
